The activity of eating meat is in itself quite an immoral act and thus prevents one from objectively seeing reality, let alone the level of sensitivity needed for spiritual cultivation. For one living entity to by force take possession and control over the life and body of another living entity, simply for the sake of satisfying one’s taste buds, is a case of colossal audacity and an example of a darkest consciousness. But the horror does not end there.
Almost all the meat that is available for purchase in stores throughout the world and especially in the US, is treated with a variety of unhealthy, dangerous chemicals. Any meat after two to three days turns nasty-looking putrid-gray. To preserve it’s red color and thus make it look appealing to the ignorant customers, the meat industry injects color-fixing chemicals into the flesh.
The most common method of giving the putrefied flesh a fresh look is by treating it with sodium nitrate (NaNO3) and sodium nitrite (NaNO2), the chemical that USDA tried to ban in 1970s but were unsuccessful because of the food industry lobbyists. Nowadays the chemical is still legal though it is known that it causes cancer. This powerful carcinogenic chemical belongs to a class of chemicals called nitrosamines which are used by lab researchers to inject into mice when they want to give the mice cancer so they can study the cancer!
This is the nature of immoral acts, one ignorance leads to another and ignorance in general leads to pain, lies, and inauthenticity. The capital position of ignorance and inauthenticity is God, or Krishna, unconsciousness. The Bhagavata purana states (10.1.4) that narrations about Krishna, and Krishna consciousness in general, is so sweet a thing that only the grossest would not take to it, that is: meat eater and animal killer. Thus this activity of killing and eating animals is considered by the Vedas to be a great obstacle to happiness, prosperity, and, the most important thing, spiritual development which is characterized by God consciousness.
The ignorant people of this world need to be educated. What chance is there for the ignorant if those who have access to knowledge are not distributing it? For this reason it is expected from those who have the Vedic knowledge to kick up their kindness and take some time and trouble to distribute it all over the world. Srila Prabhupada wrote and published his books specifically for this reason.
