Oris Erhuero
Oris was born in London in 1968 to a Nigerian family and moved to the United States in 1987. He is a celebrity, a model and an actor.
Gaura Candra Prabhu is an initiated disciple of Srila Prabhupada who sports distributing books to celebrities, books that are provided to him by the Sastra Dana program. To see Gaura Candra’s page Click Here.
It has been exactly a year now since we received an e-mail message from Gaura informing us that he had given a book to Oris and invited him to visit the Hare Krishna temple in Los Angeles.

We drove off to LA to meet up with Gaura, supply him more books and ask him a few questions about how he gave a book to Oris. Gaura was late about 20 minutes so while waiting we chatted with Arcita Prabhu, Bhaktivedanta Book Trust book designer. Arcita said he knew Oris, that he had several opportunities to talk with him at our temple in Los Angeles. We were pretty happy to learn from Arcita that Oris has been regularly visiting the temple and the temple’s “Govinda’s” restaurant. Not only that, but Oris has been practicing mantra meditation by chanting Hare Krishna on the japa mala or the prayer beads. Pretty good! - we thought. Now our eagerness to meet with Gaura increased even more.
Gaura came in his modern version of the Volks Wagen Beetle, looking all happy and relaxed as always, his clothing and hairstyle simple but chic. We embrace, exchange a few pleasantries and then move on to the “business.”
“You gave Oris his first book?” we asked. “Nope” was Gaura’s answer. To our super duper great surprise Gaura told us that Oris got his first book in a beauty parlor. He went there to have his finger nails done. While waiting he spotted this interesting looking book, our book, and picked it up to read it. And guess what? Who placed the book there? Answer: Sastra Dana. Hari hari hari bol!!! Another score for Sastra Dana.
A thing that then came to our mind was how some devotees were telling us not to waste our funds by placing books in beauty parlors. The logic was that people that go there are just way too absorbed in the bodily, physical, consciousness, a consciousness that takes one far away from the spiritual quest. We always felt that books should be made available to everyone. But the fact that our funds are limited made us think that perhaps we should concentrate the funds on distribution to perhaps potentially more productive places such as the coffee stores or medical offices. Nope, not any more do we think like that. We are continuing to place books in beauty parlors.
Gaura then finished the story by repeating that he didn’t give Oris his first book, but had later met him at a Hollywood party where he gave him a book. That is when Gaura found out that Oris had already gotten a book from Sastra Dana. Gaura then invited Oris to visit our temple which he did.

We wish Oris a happy and productive spiritual journey. May Krishna bless him. May Krishna also bless us with pure devotion to Him as we are trying our best to share Krishna consciousness with the rest of the residents of this planet. If you happen to see Oris at the Los Angeles temple please make sure he feels welcome, among the friends, and make sure he doesn’t get bothered by cheap mundane adoration.

The Least I Could Do

I Owe It All to Prabhupada

Haribol!
I returned from a Vrindavana-Mathura trip recently, and I had no idea what a shift the trip would have on my life. My life has become and continues to become more Krishna conscious as the days ensue, and I really owe it all to Prabhupada.
I feel like he is a father figure, confidante, loyal friend, and a spiritual general, of sorts, in these often difficult, war-like times. His unwavering devotion is/was a thing of beauty and awe.
